Feminopoly

Feminopoly is a satirical commentary on the persistence of the patriarchy, presented in the form of a Monopoly commercial. The commercial utilizes a hyperbolic male gaze film perspective on feminism to illustrate the patriarchy’s monopolization of women's rights. By employing a 4x3 aspect ratio, Feminopoly creates a claustrophobic feeling to mirror the oppression women face under patriarchal systems. The commercial depicts these issues with levity and a comedic tone, emphasizing the absurdities women have been subject to. Moreover, instead of traditional Monopoly game pieces, Feminopoly pieces represent produce to call out diet culture and the pressure women endure to conform to beauty standards perpetuated by the patriarchy, as beauty is a commodity in our society. U.S.bros serves as a parody of Hasbro, illustrating how many companies selling products aimed at women are often run by men. This not only raises concerns about whether said products are truly designed with women's needs and perspectives in mind, but it also perpetuates the glass ceiling effect—the invisible barrier preventing women and other minorities from advancing in the workplace. Furthermore, the male gaze perspective, which objectifies and diminishes women, along with the male (sounding) narrator, illustrates how patriarchal structures seek to control and limit women's autonomy. The commercial concludes by addressing the critical issue of sexual and reproductive rights, ensuring this topic remains at the forefront of the viewer's mind.

Pastiche

Pastiche is a short, educational film that uses the concept of a pastiche to compare modern art with that of the past, demonstrating how time is both progressive and cyclical. The film examines various pastiches across music, film, and literature, illustrating how a pastiche can span multiple genres, even within a single medium. I emphasize this point by beginning with how Ariana Grande uses similar melodic elements in her pop song "7 Rings" as the show tune "My Favorite Things". To illustrate the vast scope of pastiches, the film features more obvious comparisons, such as the spaghetti western film style in Tango, alongside subtler ones, like Chloe Wong's These Violent Delights, a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet. While pastiches circle back and draw inspiration from older periods, they often incorporate progressive elements, such as through technological advancements or new rhetorical perspectives. For example, Tiffany D. Jackson's The Weight of Blood revisits a story initially told by Stephen King through an intersectional lens, adding a layer of social commentary to the classic bullying narrative in Carrie. Additionally, the film itself is a pastiche of a silent film, imitating the aesthetics of late-19th-century and early-20th-century video production. A waltz serves as an underscore to the visuals, further emphasizing pastiches' cyclical nature.
